Post-Workout Protein Smoothie

IMG_3904

This smoothie provides the perfect nourishment needed after a workout. Good quality nutrients are essential to progress with both cardio and weight training and although each form of exercise requires slightly different fuel, both forms of training must be teamed with good sources of protein which help to restore, rebuild and strengthen. This smoothie is full of plant based protein which is easy for the body to digest.

Unfortunately, many popular protein powders are highly processed. Hemp protein is an amazing source of protein and is also full of essential fatty acids. Hemp protein can be bought in various forms; for my protein smoothie I use the powder. The addition of banana adds very quickly digestible carbs to aid the absorption of the hemp and also gives this smoothie a lovely, fruity flavour.

Spirulina is a freshwater algae (appetising I know) and you only need to use one teaspoon to reap the incredible benefits of this superfood! It is around 60-70% complete protein and on top of this it’s packed with iron which is an essential component of our red blood cells that transport oxygen around the body. Spinach is also a well known source of iron but to put the powers of spirulina in perspective, it contains 58 times more iron! Nevertheless, spinach works wonders, being a fabulous source of essential vitamins, minerals, protein and iron.

There are two options for the liquid in this smoothie: almond milk or coconut water, each creating tasty flavours. Coconut water can be especially beneficial after a sweaty cardiovascular workout as it helps to replace lost electrolytes. Have a play around and see which works best for you. I tend to make my smoothie in the morning then take it to the gym with me so that I can have it straight after exercise then I will have my lunch within the next hour or two.

Ingredients:

1 Banana
1 large handful Spinach
1c Almond Milk/Coconut Water
1 tbsp Oats
1tsp Spirulina
1 scoop Hemp Protein
1/2 tsp Cinnamon

Add all ingredients to your blender and whizz until smooth.

Next week I’m afraid I won’t be able to post as I’ll be back in Madrid!
